We have applied AI techniques to various problems since 2017 when we first started to study the application of AI to solve practical problems. A typical AI use-case for companies is forecasting the future based on collected historical data. Forecasting the future is crucial in many industry sectors and oftentimes the companies already do future forecasting using human experts. In many cases human experts can make good predictions. However, forecasting the future needs a lot of experience and humans can miss some nuances that an AI model can spot from the data based in historical events. Therefore, AI based, or AI aided future prediction can increase the future prediction accuracy and therefore add value for the business.
Other typical use-cases for AI in companies include classification and anomaly detection. Both use cases can be used in various applications to bring value for the organization. For example, in the manufacturing sector classification could be used to monitor and optimize the quality control process by automatically classifying defects to predefined categories which are then visualized in reports. An example of anomaly detection use case is preventive maintenance, where a machine is fixed before it fails by finding anomalies in the sensor data, which could indicate an imminent failure.

We are also in the frontline of using the new generation of generative AI models to solve an increasing number of real-life problems. Oftentimes data quality and the amount of data is a restricting case when trying to use traditional AI techniques to solve a problem. With the new generation of pretrained large language models comes the option of using the models as zero-shot, or few-shot learners, where only a few human samples are used to guide the model to achieve the wanted task. This opens new opportunities of applying AI in use-cases where the data quality or data amount were previously a restricting issue.
The customer data is safe in our research environment thanks to our modern on-premises high-performance computing environment where the experts do their work. The computation environment can train smaller traditional neural networks from scratch, and it is powerful enough to utilize many of the openly released pretrained large language models that can be adapted to solutions for various problems.
In addition to research and development work, JYVSECTEC experts also provide tailored AI training for organizations. The training is practical hands-on work, where the participating people learn to utilize modern AI techniques in their work.
